Painter of movement and the elusive

Besset tries to paint the fugitive, the ephemeral je-ne-sais-quoi in the movement and this unique tension which nevertheless is repeated in the act of painting.

His subject is the primordial energy, the syncopated and accustomed gesture that characterizes both the flamenco singer who awaits the "duende" and the Jazzman who prepares his solo and looks for the moment and the propitious state to play it. "

J.M. Smoluch, journaliste au Monde Diplomatique

Gérard Besset was born on December the 14th, 1945, in Paris.

Since 1980 he has been exhibiting his work in France and abroad. It is by means of fashion design at Lanvin & Castillo, that the painter starts drawing. Fascinated by the curves of the woman body, his encounter with the Impressionnist world of  Seurat, Signac, Renoir et Monet, makes him feel like thickening his lines with material.  He starts with a figurative represenation of his universe, and soon gives a new liberty to his artistical approach as he discovers the work of Pollock, Klein, Riopelle, Mitchell et Sam Francis.

He finds in abstraction a means of expressing his search : « to give an impression of the world by creating an art that takes place in a tri-dimensionnal universe”. His own artistical universe becomes a world of sensations resulting from conflicts between traces, materials and colours. His environment is nourished by artists such as  Pierre Soulages, Hartung, Matthieu or even Zao Wou-ki, and he distances himself from them by stressing his personal research on the surface on which the trace will be laid. Asserting he is more a visual artits rather than a painter he also expresses himself in engraving and sculpture. He experiences new rough materials such as stone, plaster and wire mesh that offer him new possibilities for his trace. Then altuglas  will seduce him to play with transparencies  and superpositions. This new technique evidences an ambivalent reading of the artworks, mixing matt and glossy aspects, transparency and opaqueness.
